hand marbled one of kind pillow - no. 07
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the inside covers of books were often adorned with richly colored decorative papers. Bookbinders used a wide variety of patterns to create a visual transition between the book’s exterior and its pages, enhancing the reader’s experience from the moment the cover was opened.
The earliest known examples of paper marbling date back to 12th-century Japan, where a technique called *suminagashi*, meaning “floating ink,” was developed. In Turkey, marbled papers were also used as a safeguard against document forgery, as each pattern was unique and difficult to replicate.
Inspired by these centuries-old techniques, Swarm has created a collection of one-of-a-kind pillows. Each pillow is crafted through four individual dye dips on cotton canvas, producing distinctive patterns and color variations. The resulting panels are thoughtfully selected and combined to complement one another, creating a truly unique piece that celebrates the beauty of handcrafted design.
