Staphorst Bag

In the east of the Netherlands there is a small town called Staphorst. The inhabitants are known for their traditional Dutch folk costumes that many still wear till this day. The fabrics are beautiful - rich in color and texture with the use of wools and cottons. The costume is best known for what is called ‘stipwerk’, or ‘dot-work’. Parts of the costume are made out of black fabric decorated by patterns of different colored dots - made by dipping the head of a nail into paint.

Marie Jordaan a native of the the Netherlands created these bags to carry on the tradition of the textiles. All pieces were carefully selected to create a patchwork of sorts for these wonderfully crafted bags/totes.

Marie has added a special touch to these bags - the wonderful decorative hats that are hand-painted using nail heads are now a wonderful little surprise as a pocket on the interior.
